      Introduce new trainees to know the philosophy of the program, course curriculum and activities during two years period

Duration : 1 day

Objectives :
    1. The trainees have their acquaintance to the workplace and to develop relationship to the new friends and senior physicians, advisor and other organizations as well as management on accommodation, and finance.
    2. To realize on the importance and to understand the philosophy, leaning and teaching method, various work to be occurred in the course of 2 years, and also the evaluation to training system.
    3. Having necessary skills to use in training such as English, computer usage, English typing, data analysis with statistical program such as Epi-Info.
    4. To realize on the importance of disease surveillance and public health problems operating in Thailand and other countries and to explain to the procedures of collection, data analyzing.

    o Invite senior resource persons and faculty members to introduce the training program to new trainees
    o Introduce FETP Faculty and FETP advisors
    o Learning the supporting system
    o Discussion among program trainees and country advisor.
       Introductory Course on Field Epidemiology

Training duration : 1 month

Objectives :
    1. Describe the key principles of epidemiological surveillance and outbreak investigation and explain different types and processes of surveillance and steps in outbreak investigations.
    2. Analyze and interpret the data from surveillance and outbreak investigation; and manage outbreak investigations and deliver the results for policy development, public education and implementation of appropriate interventions; and
    3. Know colleagues from other countries and start personal communication and experience sharing to strengthen surveillance and outbreak investigation capacity in their own countries and the region.

Course contents :
    - Principles of epidemiology and applied biostatistics.
    - Design and methodology for field work.
    - Surveillance and outbreak investigations.
    - Problem exercises and case studies of health problem management.

Evaluation :
    - Training time shall no less than 80% of total time to receive this certificate of training.
    - Use the evaluation form provided.

Types of teaching activities :

Lecture :
      Each speaker will give a talk and invite questions or comments from the participants.

Problem exercise :
    Based on a real case, stories and sequences of events have been developed and will be distributed to the participants. Participants will analyze the data and discuss in a group to find out most suitable solution or answers to the questions with the support of facilitators. Each problem exercise will take about 3 hours.

Summary :
      Each morning, course facilitators will summarize the main points of the previous day’s content as well as encourage question and answer of the topics.
       3.Field Study of Surveillance System Evaluation

Duration : 1 week

Target group :
      All 1st year trainees will be primary investigator (PI.), work jointly with 2nd year trainees.

Objectives :
    - In order to understand to the system and operation in the Surveillance System as well as to realize to the limitation to use the Surveillance information of epidemiology by explaining total image and procedure of collection, compile, analyze information from such surveillance including the weak and strong points of the system.
    - Trainee should be able to describe major components of a surveillance system
    - Describe how to conduct a surveillance system evaluation
    - To have feed back to the area and center part in development to the Surveillance System with much more efficiency.

Process/activities :
    - Lectures on surveillance and evaluation
    - Selecting a study site and disease under surveillance system to be evaluated
    - Planning on method of evaluation
    - Practice of field study by go out for field studying to evaluation the surveillance system and spend time in the field around 1 week
    - Present the result at local level and writing a report
    - When returning to training center, trainees shall propose the studying results to audients in FETP Weekly Scientific Meeting
    - Schedule of sending studying results is within 3 months after field study.

Evaluation :
    - Intention to work and learning while at the field.
    - Presentation the studying results and writing report of jointly working results for the whole class.
       Field Study for Outbreak Investigation

Duration : 1-2 weeks

Objectives :
    To gain field experience of outbreak investigation in Thailand under supervision of FETP faculty, before going back to conduct an investigation in own country.

Process/activities :
    - Gaining basic knowledge for epidemiological investigation by lectures and exercises
    - Verification of data source and probable outbreak
    - Preparation of investigation team and necessary equipments
    - Coordination with local health personnel and related regional centers
    - Field visit to gather the data, perform preliminary analysis, present result at local level and recommend control measures.
4.1 Preparation before going out to perform
    - During before going out for the first investigation, FETP advisor will provide lecture on what to be learned on management related to investigation.
    - Before going out to the PI area, the meeting shall be made for the persons to go along such as 2nd year trainees, investigation coordinator and specific field experts
    - Divide works among the members of the PI team, normally consists of;
    o Summary to the data obtained and verification to confirm the situation
    o Determine the objectives for this going out for investigation
    o Review literature and related important technical works from the textbooks or the old reports of investigation
    o Coordination to the provincial Public Health Office or local area
    o Coordination to the laboratory for collection the specimen, storing method, equipment used to store and delivery method.
4.2 Filed operation
    - Meeting with the Provincial Health Office or representative to report the objectives for this investigation and ask for cooperation.
    - Operate on the plan or the procedures determined in each day.
    - Summary on data, analyze, adjust the plan during each night time.
    - Before returning, the primary results shall be summarized to the Provincial Health Office and related persons, that may be the meeting or private report depending on suitability
    - Taking out the documents from the area should make in copies.
    - Use great carefulness to take the data out from the area since the data owners are volunteers and area owners who are interviewed more than the investigator who enter the area (even was are the questionnaire designer and the interviewer), it is a practice to respect to others’ right, in case of doubt how to perform, just consult the Staff.
4.3 Operation after returning from field operation
    - PI shall be responsible for delivery specimen for inspection by laboratory, the assistance may be requested from the technicians of Surveillance and Investigation Group.
    - Try to follow the related data including the results from laboratory, the results of inspection should be notified to the area within 1-2 days thereafter, if the results is late, the notification should be informed to the area periodically.
    - Analyze the data under the suggestion of advisor who went along, if there is not advisor the suggestions should be obtained from the advisor or responsible advisor for such investigation.
    - Trainees must follow the results of suggestions given to the area, some situation can be seen the operation from the duration of investigation team was in the area, but in some cases, the follow up to the area after obtaining suggestions should be followed and to take such follow up results to propose in the procedure of proposal the results, including discussion on the problems, obstacles and limitation(If any).
    - Full report draft should be delivered to the advisor within 1 month after returning from investigation, anyhow, writing report shall help the trainee to evaluate the date systematically and the absent data can be collected during the first visit to the area, writing full report shall be delivered to the staff for revision, it will help to prepare for presentation to the studying result with easiness.
4.4. Presentation working results at the FETP Scientific Meeting
    - Prepare English abstract not more than 1 page for distribution to the audience on the presentation day.
    - Try to search other studying reserved for actual known on such cases whether on epidemiology, laboratory, clinical and disease prevention.
    - Presentation with English and spend time not more than 30 minutes, trainee should consult the content and abstract with advisor who supervises on such investigation
    - If the trainees need to invite any person to join such presentation specifically, just notify to the responsible person.
4.5 Writing report and technical articles
    - The trainees must deliver all full reports before finishing the courses for this two year
    - The trainees should deliver the manuscript which already to publish to program, not more than 10 pages, containing important pictures or tables not more than 5 tables (see sample of writing manuscript, abstract)

    * Conclusion which include discussion
    * Acknowledgement
    * Reference

Evaluation :
    - Responsibility on duty and working in this activity shall include in the evaluation of responsibility of all trainees every 6 month.
    - Work completely according to the criteria and time conditions determined such as writing report to propose to the executive, follow up working results thereafter finishing the disease investigation, publication the investigation results to publicize or writing complete report and preparation to propose in Monday Meeting.
    - Every year (end of the year) in examination, the study results of trainees shall be used for oral examination
    - Quality of each work shall reflect the intention and knowledge with technical ability, in case the Committee evaluates physician’s working results with jointly opinion that any trainee should have additional investigation in order to obtain sufficient knowledge and skill, the notification can be informed to such trainees to have additional investigation.
       FETP Weekly Scientific Meeting

Duration : Every Monday at 09.00 am. sharply.

Objectives :
    o Summary and present outbreak investigation progress from trainee who responsible for verify outbreak and PI of outbreak investigation
    o Brief summary an epidemiology weekly report from international journal
    o Present their study in the meeting
    o Develop skill and practice in scientific presentation
    o Study more knowledge by experts from other field

Process/activities :
    1. Outbreak announcement or follow up the investigate results of the past weeks.
    2. The trainees read the news of disease surveillance (MMWR) of Disease Control and US. CDC., WHO Weekly Report or news from PROMED etc. The specific important matters shall be concluded for the colleagues only.
    3. Criticism to the articles from Journal Club once a month.
    4. Review knowledge on statistics and epidemiology as Tutorial Session once a month.

    - Every meeting, one of those trainees shall be assigned to be the Moderator and to control the time for the activities until finishing on the day
    - Presentation of the trainees shall be in 30 minutes. The trainees shall make the Standard Abstract with no more than 1 page in English consisting of 4 main topics; those are Background, Method, Results, and Conclusion (See sample attached herewith). Anyhow, the Presentation File provided shall be consulted with the advisor before presentation,
    - The trainees can invite the instructors or related outsiders to listen the presentation and to criticize the working results
    - To present the working results to be evaluated by using the Evaluation Form provided.
    - Tutorial Session is an activity for the trainees to have their opportunity to review the statistical knowledge and necessary epidemiology, while the topic shall determine and assign to have the reviewer from the beginning of the year, and the trainees should take Hand Out or Presentation File prepared to consult to the advisor before actual presentation at least 2 weeks.
      During the 3 weeks period that trainees come back to the training center trainees have to attend FETP Weekly Scientific Meeting conducted in every Monday. If situation allowed, some trainees might be assign to responsible for some activities in the weekly meeting, which can be:
    o Moderator of the morning section, including summarize interesting PROMED news of the previous week
    o Summarize MMWR (US, CDC) or WHO Weekly Report (not longer than 5 minutes)
    o Journal club (see guideline in appendix)
    o Tutorial Section

Interesting note: When trainees present the result of investigation or study, they should provide abstract to audience in the meeting room
